The hospital ship Mercy is activating in the event it will be called upon to deploy to the Philippines in support of Operation Damayan, the Navy announced Wednesday night.

Adm. Harry Harris Jr., commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, ordered the ship to activate.

“Harris’ activation order accelerates Mercy’s ability to attain full operating status to include moving necessary personnel and equipment to the ship,” the Navy stated in a news release.

Mercy would be deployable in several days, arriving in the Philippines in December.

“In 2012, Mercy participated in the annual Pacific Partnership mission, which included working with Philippine authorities in the vicinity of Tacloban, the area hardest hit by Typhoon Haiyan,” the Navy reported.
