WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has announced the death of a 29-year-old North Texas soldier in a roadside bombing attack in Afghanistan.

A Defense Department statement on Monday identified the soldier as Staff Sgt. Alex A. Viola of Keller. It says he died in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device while the unit was on dismounted patrol.
