Reservists see slightly better chance to advance

While active-duty sailors saw a dip in their chance to advance into and up the petty officer ranks, reservists got better news — 1,881 are set to advance to E-4, E-5 or E-6, and all but incoming E-4s saw a higher advancement opportunity than in the spring.

Reservists moving up to E-6 saw their chance to advance increase to 8.7 percent, up from 6.5 percent last cycle, according to a Thursday news release from the Navy Reserve. Prospective E-5s have a 15.1 percent chance to move up, compared with 11.5 percent from the spring.

Only incoming E-4s have a rougher road compared with last cycle — 32.5 percent advancement opportunity, down from 35.4 percent. That’s mainly because of an increase in sailors eligible to move up, according to the release.

“These improvements reflect that our force management efforts are working,” Vice Adm. Robin Braun, head of the Navy Reserve, said in the release. “These quotas meet our force manning requirements and are an important step toward stabilizing advancement opportunities from cycle to cycle.”
