Army launches fuel cell testing with GM

The Army announced it will start testing hydrogen fuel cells in conjunction with General Motors at a laboratory at the U.S. Army Detroit Arsenal in Warren, Mich.

The Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center, or TARDEC, and GM are launching the tests Dec. 16 at the service's Ground System Power and Energy Laboratory, which opened last year.

A ceremony marking the launch is meant to highlight several cooperative research and development agreements, or CRADAS, between TARDEC and its industry partners related to developing energy capabilities.

At the lab's opening last year, Army officials encouraged industry and academic stakeholders to partner with government scientists and engineers to use the lab’s new high-tech facilities to develop dual-use power and mobility solutions to benefit both industry and military researchers.

It was billed as the cornerstone of the Army's next generation of power, energy and mobility initiatives and the center of the Army and TARDEC's overall energy strategy.

“Through CRADAs, the Army has the opportunity to leverage its research and development efforts with industry,” said TARDEC director Paul Rogers. “A goal of TARDEC is to demonstrate a battlefield fuel reduction to reduce the logistical burden on our warfighters.

He said agreements such as the one with GM will “assist in maturing and accelerating technologies critical to the Army’s future ground vehicle platforms.”
