The 58 sailors and Marines who used their Navy Cash or Marine Cash debit cards to pay for items at Target during the retail chain’s recent data breach won’t have to worry about fraud, the Navy says — but they will get a new card.

The cards, issued to all sailors and Marines stationed on a ship, are most often used aboard in place of paper money, but can be used as traditional debit cards at regular retail outlets.

The accounts of the 58 users who made purchases at Target between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 “are being monitored for unusual activity,” said Rear Adm. Jonathan Yuen, head of Naval Supply Systems Command, in a Tuesday news release.

The cardholders will receive new cards from disbursing officers on their ships, the release states, saying their funds will be protected by the credit card company backing their plastic — MasterCard — and by customer protection measures in the Electronic Fund Transfer Act.

Sailors and Marines with concerns about specific transactions can email or call 866-362-8922.

Up to 40 million credit and debit card accounts, including encrypted personal identification numbers, may have been hacked during the breach. Target has offered to monitor the credit of any affected shopper.
