Attack submarine Topeka will be the fourth sub homeported in Guam after it emerges from its extended overhaul, Naval Submarine Force Pacific announced Monday night.

Topeka is undergoing a three-year engineered overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire and will move to Guam, joining attack subs Chicago, Key West and Oklahoma City, as well as sub tender Frank Cable.

The latest move will increase the number of attack subs at Guam as part of the strategic pivot to the Asia-Pacific and “put the most advanced and capable units forward,” the SUBPAC release said. “The decision to homeport Topeka in Guam brings that vision to fruition.”

Topeka’s overhaul began in December 2012, and the ship is getting upgrades and repairs to make it the most capable Los Angeles-class attack sub, the release said.

The news came as the Navy’s top officer visited bases on the U.S. territory as part of an Asia-Pacific trip. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jon Greenert toured facilities including the naval hospital, gym and Fleet and Family Support Center. Greenert also met with students at a Defense Department high school.

“Everything everybody does in the Navy today is important,” Greenert told the students, according to a Monday news release.

Greenert is headed to meetings with defense leaders in Malaysia and the Philippines.
