Delaware authorities have dropped charges against a former Dover Air Force Base staff sergeant who was accused of sexually abusing a young child in 2007 and 2008.

“After a thorough review of all of the evidence developed in this case, the Department of Justice determined it could not move forward with prosecution,” said Jason Miller, a spokesman for the Delaware attorney general’s office.

Staff Sgt. Jesus Munoz, now stationed at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., had faced 56 charges, including rape, sexual abuse and unlawful contact with a child, while he was assigned to the 436th Medical Support Squadron at Dover.

The charges were formally dropped Jan. 29, Miller said.

Munoz said in an interview with Air Force Times that he had maintained his innocence since first learning of the allegations. Now, he hopes to clear his name, he said.

Munoz, who enlisted in 2002, said the allegations have left his military career uncertain. He hopes to re-enlist in May, he said.

“I am just happy the truth came out, and I’m able to continue my life, somewhat,” Munoz said.

Munoz said the allegations rose out of a messy divorce and custody battle.

“Because of this, I spent 18 days in prison and my family had to come up with a very large amount of money to bail me out of jail and prove my innocence,” Munoz said. “After six long months of traveling from Florida to Delaware for court hearings, my attorney and I were able to prove that these allegations were false and the state of Delaware dropped all the charges.”
