Va. bases to participate in Navy exercise

NORFOLK, VA. — Hampton Roads travelers could encounter delays around Navy bases as an annual anti-terrorism exercise is conducted through the end of February.

Called Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield, the training in Virginia and elsewhere in the U.S. begins Tuesday. It is meant to help the Navy practice how it would respond to terrorist threats at home.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that the Coast Guard and local emergency responders also are taking part.

Navy officials are telling nearby residents and commuters to plan for delays around Hampton Roads installations. They can also expect to see and hear extra activity, including loudspeaker announcements and sirens.

The exercise is the Navy's biggest anti-terrorism training.
