E-6 exam postponed for nearly 70 sailors

Nearly 70 sailors in the National Capitol Region slated to take Thursday’s E-6 exam will get a few extra weeks to study due to a delay, a personnel official told Navy Times Wednesday night.

The exams were scheduled for March 6, the date all advancement-eligible E-5s Navy-wide will sit to take their exams. But the test in the Navy’s National Capitol Region has been postponed. A date for the make-up test has yet to be scheduled. Other fleet exams will go on as scheduled.

“Because of an administrative error, the E-6 exam for sailors in the National Capitol Region has been postponed,” said Lt. Cmdr. Chris Servello, spokesman for the chief of naval personnel. “Unit leadership will work with the approximately 70 sailors affected to order make up exams for a later date.”

The delay in giving the exams, the officials say, is because some of the exams were mistakenly opened in a mail facility after arriving in the Washington, D.C., area. Officials told Navy Times they didn’t think the content of the exams were compromised, but decided to postpone the exams until replacement test booklets could be shipped.

Affected sailors will be notified by their commands and will get the details on when their exams will take place. Make-up exams are common in the fleet as some sailors can’t sit on the normal scheduled date because of operational or personal reasons.

Though they don’t feel there was any malicious intent, Navy officials in this case decided to err on the side of caution, the official said, because the exams are so central to a sailor’s chance to advance.
