2 fires burning at remote Fort Hood range

FORT HOOD, TEXAS — Two fires have been reported on the remote training range of a Central Texas military installation and the odor has drifted as far south as Austin.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the Fort Hood fires continued burning Wednesday.

Fort Hood officials say both fires ignited during training Tuesday when soldiers set off incendiary rounds.

Spokesman Chris Haug says military officials will decide whether to cancel training because of conditions favorable to fires.

Military firefighters worked to put out the blazes, including one thatís about 200 acres. Details werenít immediately available on the second fire. A message left with Fort Hood wasnít immediately returned Wednesday.

Austin firefighter Bo Allen says thereís a strong smell of smoke and itís coming from Fort Hood. Austin is about 60 miles south of the post.
