An airman is among four people killed in a car crash Saturday night in East Wichita, Kan. One passenger remains in critical condition.

Airman 1st Class Jessica Metzger of Philadelphia died on impact after the Ford Escape she was riding in swerved into a median, which projected the car into a retaining wall, according to The Wichita Eagle.

Metzger, 26, was a crew chief with the 22nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron stationed at McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., since October. She enlisted in the Air Force in May.

“Jessica was a proud and dedicated member of the 22d Aircraft Maintenance Squadron,” her commander, Lt. Col. Christine Peyton, said in an email to Air Force Times. “She was ambitious, energized and driven, setting the example for others to follow. She had a wonderfully positive attitude and outlook on life.”

A memorial service for Metzger will take place at 8 a.m. Friday at the McConnell base chapel.

Authorities believe the driver of the vehicle, Andrew Montgomery, 39, also killed, may have suffered a “serious medical condition” rendering him unable to control the vehicle, which prompted the crash.

Montgomery had been hired through Triple B’s Express to be the designated driver for the four friends, Lt. Joe Schroeder of the Wichita Police Department told The Wichita Eagle.

Sara Smith, 23, and Victoria Daugherty, 27, were among the victims who died in the crash. Janell Henderson, 34, who was thrown from the car, remains in critical condition at Wesley Medical Center.

Schroeder said investigators are awaiting toxicology results to see if Montgomery was under the influence of anything at the time of the crash, but “there is no indication that alcohol was a factor in this collision.”

Police also are awaiting an autopsy to confirm whether Montgomery suffered a medical episode.
