Law enforcement officials at Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, sounded the all clear after an investigators failed to uncover evidence that shots had been fired near the base, Navy officials said Monday afternoon.

The base went into lockdown around 9:45 a.m. Pacific Standard Time after several reports of loud bangs Monday. Navy Installations Command tweeted the news around 10:20 a.m., PST.

Naval Base Kitsap spokesman Tom Danaher said local authorities investigated reports of loud noises that sounded like shotgun blasts in the neighborhood outside the base and Navy security forces searched inside the gate, but neither turned up any evidence of gunfire. No injuries were reported, Danaher said.

The Kitsap Sun reported that the Navy locked down the base as a precautionary measure and that officials believe the noise could have been a backfiring truck.

Naval Base Kitsap is the largest installation in Navy Region Northwest and is composed of installations in Bremerton, Bangor and Keyport.
