Sailor found dead at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth

A sailor was found dead in his barracks on the grounds of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The man, whose name hasn't been released, was found in his room on Naval Support Activity Portsmouth Annex. People went looking for him when he didn't show up for work, the Navy said.

The situation was reported as an active shooter at the six-story barracks on the water around 9:20 a.m.

Sources tell 13News Now the situation was over by 9:40 a.m. when that person was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Ambulances that were at the barracks left shortly before 10 a.m.

There's no information about the person's identity or whether he lived in the barracks.

A viewer told 13News Now that he was in line waiting to get in when he heard of the incident.

Hospital spokeswoman Deborah Kallgren stressed the incident didnít take place at the hospital.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating to determine the cause of death.

This is the second shooting on a navy installation in Hampton Roads several weeks. The first was March 24 when a civilian truck driver got onto Naval Station Norfolk and aboard USS Mahan. the Navy says he was able to get a gun from USS Mahan's petty officer of the watch. He shot and killed Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Mayo, who got between the woman and the gunman.
