Making E-8 gets slightly tougher

The latest E-8 selection board convened Monday with a mandate to select 1,445 of 12,010 eligible chief petty officers to pin a senior chief’s star over their anchors.

The chance to get picked this year is 12.03 percent, down from the 14-year high of 13.62 percent chance at last year’s board, according to figures released Tuesday by the chief of naval personnel.

The senior enlisted selection rates are down-ticking from record highs, but still remain elevated: This year’s opportunity is identical that of two years ago. And it’s still the best shot at senior chief — the Navy’s toughest enlisted rank to crack — in 17 years.

Thirty-two ratings will advance at a level at or above the Navy-wide 12.03 average. Advancement chances in the other 56 ratings will fall below that mark.

The reason for the decline: 248 fewer quotas are available this year.

It could have been much worse, but for a corresponding drop of 421 eligible chiefs competing for those chances, resulting in the overall drop in opportunity.
