Under the revised Qualitative Management Program, separation processing will be initiated when a staff sergeant or sergeant first class fails to complete the appropriate NCO Education System course for their rank as follows:
■ Staff sergeants upon reaching 48 months’ time-in-grade as an E-6 without having graduated from the Advanced Leaders Course.
■ Sergeants first class upon reaching 48 months’ time-in-grade as an E-7 without graduating from the Senior Leaders Course.
Soldiers who are not in compliance with the NCOES requirement have until the next board to complete the training.
This means sergeants first class must complete the Senior Leaders Course by February 2015, while staff sergeants must complete the Advanced Leaders Course by June 2015.
If soldiers complete the training by those dates, they no longer will be considered for denial of continued service, according to Army sources.
The new NCOES requirement supports a revised career timeline for NCOs being implemented this year and into 2015.
Under those changes, soldiers are given a 48-month period to prepare themselves for promotion consideration. The expectation is that staff sergeants and sergeants first class will complete the Advanced Leaders Course and the Senior Leaders Course within that time frame, sources said.
