A former employee at the Dayton Veterans Administration hospital was taken into custody Monday after allegedly opening fire at the center, injuring one man who struggled with him over the weapon, official said.

The suspect, Neil Moore, 59, a former housekeeper at the VA center, was taken into custody by hospital security guards at Dayton’s Good Samaritan hospital, official.

He told workers at the hospital that he was seeking “psychiatric services,” according to police.

The injured man was identified as Paul Burnside, 61, who was shot in the ankle while apparently trying to wrest the gun away from the shooter.

Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl told reporters at a news conference that the shooting took place around noon in the break room of the hospital basement.

No motive was given for the shooting. One officer, speaking on police scanner, said the suspect apparently “came in looking for someone else to do harm to, didn’t find him and fired at this guy.”

Police said the suspect was driving a GM truck with “disabled vet” tags. The weapon allegedly used in the shooting was found in truck, which was parked in the driveway of Moore’s sister.

Police dispatches indicate that the sister had driven Moore to the Good Samaritan hospital.
