The Navy fired the commanding officer of a Groton, Connecticut-based attack submarine Wednesday for unsatisfactory professional performance, Submarine Group 2 said in a news release.

Cmdr. Jamie Biondi, the CO of the San Juan, was removed “due to a loss of confidence in his ability to serve effectively as commanding officer,” SUBGRU 2 said in the release, adding that the relief “was related to shortfalls in professional performance, leading to leadership’s loss of confidence in his ability to serve in a position of command authority.”

Capt. Vernon Parks, the commodore of Submarine Development Squadron 12, fired Biondi, who’s been reassigned to SUBGRU 2.

Cmdr. Sam Geiger, the deputy commander at Submarine Squadron 4 who previously commanded another Los Angeles-class attack boat, has temporarily assumed command.

Biondi, who took charge of the San Juan in April 2012, is a prior enlisted officer who joined the Navy in 1987, receiving his commission six years later. During his 27-year career, Biondi has received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Joint Service Achievement Medals and three Navy Commendation Medals, in addition to other campaign and personal awards.

Biondi did not immediately reply to email seeking comment Wednesday.
