LATHAM, N.Y. — A surgeon with nearly four decades of military service and a young member of the New York National Guard will do the honors of cutting a cake celebrating the U.S. Army’s 239th birthday.

Friday afternoon’s traditional cake-cutting ceremony at National Guard headquarters in suburban Albany commemorates the Army’s birthday on June 14, 1775. That’s the date when the Continental Congress voted to adopt the New England colonial militia troops facing off against British redcoats outside Boston.

The cake cutters are Col. Joan Sullivan of Ithaca and Pvt. 1st Class Jack Jeffers of Clifton Park.

The 65-year-old Sullivan is the Army National Guard state surgeon. She’s retiring this summer after 37 years in uniform.

Jeffers represents the youngest soldiers in the New York Army National Guard. He enlisted in September 2012 and serves in an aviation unit.
