The Navy has chosen the next skipper of the San Diego-based cruiser Cowpens, sources confirmed to Navy Times, a selection that came in the days following the high-profile relief of its skipper for performance problems uncovered two months after the ship returned from deployment.

Capt. Scott Sciretta has been selected as the permanent commanding officer, replacing the acting officer, Capt. Robert Chadwick.

Sciretta, a former CO of the destroyer Jason Dunham, was slated to take over a destroyer squadron when he was diverted to San Diego in the wake of the June 10 firing of Capt. Gregory Gombert, who was the third Cowpens CO canned since 2010.

The Navy hasn’t announced the move and officials said Sciretta had, as of Tuesday, not visited the ship, which returned from seven-month deployment in mid-April.

One acquaintance of Sciretta’s said the officer’s personal Facebook page has seen many postings congratulating him on getting the Cowpens and wishing him luck.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated Sciretta had visited the San Diego-based Cowpens and expressed concerns over the ship’s material condition.
