CHARLESTON, W.VA. — The National Guard is recommending that the Medal of Honor be awarded to a West Virginia man who saved his platoon during a secret mission in Laos during the Vietnam War.

Sixty-four-year-old Master Sgt. Edward Ziobron received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions in 2005. The Charleston Gazette reports that the National Guard wants the award upgraded to the nationís highest award for valor.

West Virginia National Guard adjutant general Maj. James Hoyer says he believes Ziobron didnít receive official recognition at the time because the November 1970 mission was classified.

The former Green Beret was wounded several times during a four-day off-and-on battle with the North Vietnamese Army.

Ziobron is now a civilian special forces consultant with the National Guard and lives near Martinsburg.
