LOBELVILLE, TENN. — Authorities charged a 15-year-old Thursday in a fatal shooting at a National Guard Armory here.

Christopher C. Farrar of Lobelville is charged with one count of criminal homicide and is being held without bond in Rutherford County, according to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officials. He is accused gaining access to the armory about 75 miles southwest of Nashville, Tenn., and of firing several shots Wednesday.

The armory is usually locked.

One of those shots hit Sgt. 1st Class Michael W. Braden, 45, of Ripley, Tenn., who died at Perry County Medical Center, about 12 miles away in Linden before he could be transported to a Nashville trauma center.

Braden joined the Tennessee Army National Guard in 1987. During his 27 years of service, he deployed twice to Kuwait, in 2003 and 2007.

“This is a sad day for the Tennessee National Guard,” Maj. Gen. Max Haston, the adjutant general of Tennessee, said in a statement. “We have tragically lost one of our own. Our hearts and prayers go out to Sgt. 1st Class Braden’s wife and children, his extended family and to our Tennessee National Guard family.”

Whether Farrar, who was arrested without incident at his family’s home, will face charges as an adult will be decided later in the court process. Investigators have not announced a motive for the crime.
