McDonald confirmation hearing scheduled for Tuesday

The Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee will hold a confirmation hearing for VA secretary nominee Bob McDonald next week, giving the chamber a chance to appoint him to the post before its August legislative recess.

McDonald, the former CEO of Procter & Gamble, was named by the White House to take over the job earlier this month.

If confirmed, he’ll take over a department beset by scandals regarding veterans who face long wait times for health appointments, administrators who gamed records to gain bonuses, and managers who have retaliated against whistleblowers for pointing out facility failures.

The July 22 hearing will be McDonald’s first formal appearance before the committee as a nominee, but the 61-year-old veteran has spent the last two weeks meeting with lawmakers to talk about his vision for the department.

White House officials have touted his management skills at nearly every level of leadership at Procter & Gamble and his ability to innovate at the corporate giant.

Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., chairman of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, said in a statement that he hopes McDonald’s confirmation will “give the VA the long-term leadership that it needs.”

Sanders and other committee members have been largely supportive of Gibson’s nomination.

Assuming the committee approves his nomination, the full Senate also will have to vote to confirm McDonald. The chamber is scheduled to start an extended legislative break at the end of the month.
