WEST LAFAYETTE, OHIO — An Army veteran who says his pet ducks help relieve his post-traumatic stress disorder is getting his day in court after being cited for violating an Ohio village ban, even though someone else already paid his fine.

A hearing was scheduled Wednesday in Coshocton Municipal Court for Darin Welker, who keeps 14 ducks in his backyard in West Lafayette.

Welker was cited for not complying with a ban on residents keeping farm animals in the village, about 80 miles east of Columbus. The court clerk’s office says Welker’s $140 fine and court costs were paid online by a Newtown, Pennsylvania, man.

Welker said he didn’t know someone was going to pay his fine. He says he hadn’t planned to plead guilty or pay the fine and wants a hearing.
