Ex-Utah guardsmen charged with recruiting fraud

SALT LAKE CITY — Prosecutors say four former Utah National Guard members stole from the Army in recent years by receiving bonuses for soldiers they never recruited.

U.S. National Guard Association spokesman John Goheen tells the Deseret News the guardsmen took advantage of the national recruiting effort. He says the now-closed program took a new approach, rewarding soldiers if their friends or relatives enlisted.

Fraud charges were filed last week in federal court.

Charging documents say two Utah members took credit for bringing on 26 soldiers from 2006 to 2009, receiving tens of thousands of dollars in bonuses. Some of the new soldiers said they didnít know the recruiters; Others said they had already decided to enlist.

The Army says it is investigating 1,200 people nationwide who defrauded the program of $29 million.
