Professional military education: Guard and Reserve members
Staff Colleges
Air Command and Staff College. At Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Ala., this school provides intermediate professional military education for select mid-career officers. The 10-month course admits about 600 students each year, normally at the rank of major. Selection is competitive.
The college has two resident schools: the Command and Staff College and School of Advanced Airpower Studies. There also is a nonresident Air Command and Staff College.

Army Command and General Staff College. Located at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., this is the Army’s senior tactical institution. The development of war-fighting skills at corps and division levels is central to the college’s 10-month curriculum, which includes the Command and General Staff Officer’s Course. Limited opportunities exist for reservists to attend in residence.

Army Management Staff College. The Army has renewed its emphasis on training civilians as leaders. The Training and Doctrine Command is developing a new leader development system called the Civilian Education System, scheduled to begin in January 2007. Once the policies to implement the program are completed, details on class dates, eligibility and the application process will be posted at http://amscportal.belvoir.army.mil.

Marine Corps Command and Staff College. Located in Quantico, Va., this college offers a 10-month intermediate course and an advanced intermediate course of professional military education to approximately 200 field-grade officers. It has two resident schools: The Command and Staff College and School of Advanced Warfighting.

Marine Corps College of Continuing Education. In Quantico, Va., this is the Corps’ primary institution for Advanced Distributed Learning. It designs, develops, delivers and manages distance learning products and programs via a global network of satellite campuses, learning resource centers and video tele-training centers.
Regional coordinators at major installations facilitate local professional military education seminars for Command and Staff College and the Expeditionary War School for military students unable to attend resident courses or schools.

MarineNet. This is the enterprise delivery network through which active and reserve Marines and the civilian work force access Professional Military Education classes, computer training and professional development and job aids from a computer. MarineNet offers courses such as Fundamentals of Marine Corps Leadership and the Marine Corps Planning Process, and other required training such as the Operational Risk Management Course.
All personnel entered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) database are authorized to use MarineNet at no cost. Family members can take online professional and personal development courses in addition to the Lifestyles Insights Networking and Skills Course for Marine Spouses. Many online courses are accepted for college credit or professional certification.

Navy College of Naval Command and Staff. In Newport, R.I., this is the Navy’s intermediate school and is part of the Naval War College. Students in the 10-month curriculum are mid-grade U.S. officers and career civilian equivalents.
