Enlisted professional military education: Navy
Posted : Friday Dec 1, 2006 12:17:50 EST
The Navy currently has only limited official professional military education for enlisted sailors, but that is beginning to change. In 2007, a handful of command master chiefs were selected to attend the Navy War College in Newport, R.I. That program is now expanding and more master chiefs will be attending
In addition, recent legislation approved by Congress allows enlisted sailors to attend classes at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., though the service has yet to implement the program.
Also, chief’s, senior chiefs and master chiefs are eligible to attend the Navy Senior Enlisted Academy, either through in-residence training or distance education. The Navy’s goal is to eventually require every E-8 to complete the course before they can advance to master chief, though they’ve yet to formally implement that requirement.
The Navy’s Center for Naval Leadership offers a progression of courses designed to help prepare and mentor enlisted leaders. While not formally called PME, these courses are in essence the same thing and range from a petty officer indoctrination course taught at the command level to in residence courses that prime first line leaders, work center supervisors and leading chief petty officers on the best way to lead their sailors.
