Web tools to get ahead in your education or career
New Web tools for career development are springing up all the time, and colleges are increasingly offering degrees online. Check back for updates.
MySpace contest recruits TV production talent
Post your original five- to seven-minute TV pilot to a dedicated MySpace page starting Sept. 4, and you could win $25,000 and a development deal with Fox.
MySpace users will get to view the pilots for “The Storyteller Challenge” and weigh in on their favorites. User rankings and a panel of expert judges from Fox and the Producers Guild of America will determine two winners.
The top six finalists will be announced Jan. 6 and flown to Hollywood to pitch series ideas to the judges. Winners will be announced Jan. 25.

Jobster-Facebook partnership connects networking, recruiting
Social networking site Facebook and employment site Jobster have teamed up to produce a new career networking and job search feature, according to a news release.
The application connects Facebook users with Jobster’s network of employers. Employers can search for job candidates and keep users apprised of job openings and recruiting events.
An additional tool allows users to convert their Facebook profiles into digital résumés.

Get good pay for weekend work with HireaHelper.com
You can make extra cash in your free time by mowing lawns, doing household repairs, helping people move — or whatever your skills may dictate.
A new Web site says it could help you earn more for weekend work because customers can rate you once the job’s done, according to a news release. Those with good feedback can charge more money, HireaHelper.com believes.
HireaHelper.com allows you to advertise your services, name your price and find one-time or occasional jobs that fit around your schedule. Customers can pay by credit card through the site.

Assumption offers rehab counseling master’s online
Massachusetts’ Assumption College announced in July that it will offer its Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling degree online. The program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education and can be completed in less than three years, according to a news release.
Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor Examination.
Online classes begin Aug. 27 for the fall 2007 semester.

Woo admissions officers with CollegeSupplement.com
CollegeSupplement.com thinks it can give you an edge in the college application process.
The new site posts videos for students courting the admissions offices of their favorite universities. Students upload up to three videos to a secure platform, and admissions officers view them using a code.
If you trust the quality of your video clips — in other words, you’re comfortable with how your clips will display to recruiters — then you can use CollegeSupplement.com’s free service. The premium service converts your video into a universal format while preserving quality, according to a news release.

LexisNexis tool tracks executives
Want to ensure you go to work with true movers-and-shakers? Think about researching your next boss using LexisNexis’ new ExecRelate tool.
The subscription-based service provides “intelligence” on company head-honchos and their relationships, says a LexisNexis news release. Users can leverage ExecRelate “to find connections to executives and understand who is influencing the marketplace,” and alerts let you know about personnel changes — individual or within an entire company.
ExecRelate’s Relationship Manager feature allows users to connect with key contacts.
