Back Talk: A broken, bullying command structure

The idea that you have to participate in this negative behavior or risk being ostracized or “blackballed” by the other members of your wardroom or command is a cop-out. The solution to the pervasive negativity does not lie in some fleetwide initiative. It lies, rather, in a personal decision by each member of the surface community to shift the paradigm. When confronted with negative leadership, do not pass it on to those beneath you. Rather, make a conscious decision to lead positively.

Navy Working Uniform

There are those who say, “Most sailors in Naval District Washington work in an office.” Does that really matter? Personnel specialists and yeomen work in an office on a ship; how much dirty work do they actually do, except maintaining their spaces while in port? Are the shore commands in Norfolk (Va.) wearing the service uniform or NWU? This region-by-region wear plan is a little ridiculous. Most of it is driven by who doesn’t want to buy the uniform. I’m sorry if you’re an E-9 and don’t want to buy it before you retire — return your clothing allowance for the two years you were given it to purchase the new uniform. It’s time to move forward and make the NWU the uniform of the day fleetwide.
