Service for citizenship?

In the spirit of Robert A. Heinlein, I’m wondering if we hadn’t ought to formalize this and offer all of the illegals in this country (that we catch) the chance to serve in the military in return for citizenship — thus “earning” citizenship, as in Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers.”

Heinlein had a lot of brilliant ideas in that book. His ideas are rather revolutionary. An American Foriegn Legion idea has been brought up many times and seems rather logical. Too many peoples’ freedom rests on the work and efforts of too few. Immigrants who offer their lives in service to the state should be reimbursed with citizenship. Often the immigrants who are willing to do such a thing represent what is best in this country and what we seem to have strayed from as a country. It is a win-win scenario for us and them.

Mandatory service for everyone? We couldn’t afford it. Wasting all of this money just to “teach American citizens something” is a complete waste and a foolish idea to begin with.

Stop taxing the troops

If you think our checks will stay the same or get the raises each year as high as they are without being taxed, you are crazy. Not to mention that without taxes, the members with children will not be able to collect the Earned Income Credit. Without taxes, our credits and refunds that normal Americans make would be null and void. This year, because I [file my] taxes, I will be able to get the $8,000 stimulus check for buying a home. Last year, I wouldn’t have been able to get the stimulus check in the middle of the year. The tax exemption is a hell of an incentive for some people to volunteer to go to the sandbox.

Are we a safer nation?

Criminals not only have more rights, but they have a roof over their heads, food, etc., and don’t have to pay anything for that.

We’re worse off than we started. We’re enabling terrorists to recruit more terrorists, thanks to Al-Jazeera painting our efforts in a negative manner.
