NAVY’S TURN TO SHINE

If we take the stance that we should be fighting pirates half-way around the world, we should also take the stance that we should have been there to help prevent the conditions that caused the pirates. Our country doesn’t really know what we do every day. They don’t know we’ve got friends pounding sand in the sandbox. They don’t know what our submarines have done (aside from the almost comical mishaps).

There are thousands of sailors on deployment right now, away from their families, and they get a slap in the face like this? The reason we don’t get recognition is because we’re there to prevent problems before they start. We’re all doing our job, and doing it extremely well. The fact that nobody hears about it is a testament to that.

The best thanks is the one you get from John/Jane Doe on the street — “Thank you for your service.”

NEXT-GEN SHIP: SPACIOUS FEEL, LITTLE STEEL

I thought, after the USS Stark’s aluminum hull burned so easily, that the Navy had sworn off aluminum hulls.

U.S. JUDGE HEARS CHALLENGE TO IRAQ WAR

Congress approved the use of U.S. armed forces against Iraq. That differs from a declaration of war exactly how?

SAILORS BLAST WEAR RULES FOR BLUE CAMMIES

History and tradition are some of the biggest detractors from us growing up as a service and learning to find our own path. I understand and revere those things, but imitation of the “old days” is a poor mentality. We are a modern seagoing service. What we do has nothing more than a slim resemblance to what our predecessors did. My chiefs I had when I came in would be horrified to think of us on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq. But we rise to the challenges presented and adapt to changing times, right? Time for our leaders to do the same, or go away and make room for someone who will.
