MINORITY ADMIRALS
The Navy is the only force with minority recruiting requirements. When the CNO implies that COs may be mentoring their [junior officers and department heads] based not on need and ability, but on some sort of racial preference, I’m offended. The offshoot of all the conversations of this vein is to remove credence from all minorities that are selected for positions of leadership.

BAH for online students?
If the school is accredited, the student is taking the required number of credits and complying with whatever other rules of the program, there should be no difference in the benefits. [The housing allowance] should be for place of residence.

COUPLES IN COMBAT
If we’re talking about war zone deployment specifically — the best thing to do (in the interest of military) is to NOT deploy a married couple together. That kind of thing is just distracting from the mission. I have seen how sexual relations create a degradation within the unit as a whole, not to mention the two people involved. Bottom line: It’s just not worth it in the long run.

‘DADT’ debate
I’m Navy and I support “don’t ask, don’t tell,” although I wish I didn’t have to. Personally, I do not feel that heterosexual people should be forced to live with homosexual people, anymore than men should be forced to live with women.

Like it or not, there are probably gays currently serving in your unit right now. I don’t support DADT, but it is only a matter of time until gays are going to be able to serve openly. The current president has bigger problems to worry about right now. Once the economy gets straightened out, I will not be surprised when this issue comes to the forefront. We in the military will just have to accept the fact [that] gays will be openly serving beside us.
