LANDING FIELD PROJECT DELAYED BY JSF REVIEW
I just don’t get it. In recent decades, the Navy and Air Force have closed East Coast airfields due to [base realignment and closure] after those communities fought to keep them open. Now the Navy wants to build a new airfield in North Carolina, and the community doesn’t want it there. Why don’t they just reopen one of the airfields and upgrade it to accommodate the Joint Strike Fighter?

Sorting VA benefits claims
As a disabled vet and a veterans service representative for Veterans Affairs, I can speak from experience when I say the VA is working very hard to try to address the needs of all veterans. My office in central Florida is 80 percent veteran-operated with 50 percent of them being disabled veterans.
The problem we have is that every person [who] ever signed on the dotted line, regardless of washing out in boot camp or receiving a less-than-honorable discharge, thinks [he is] entitled to benefits. It takes away from us taking care of vets [who] honestly earned ... their benefits.

SAILORS SOUND OFF ON SLOPPY SHIPMATES
The problem is that the Navy is looking more to modernize [itself] as a corporation and not a military. I say this because of the lack of focus on recruits in boot camp. That is where it starts and spreads like wildfire through the fleet.
People get off the bus at their “A” school with toothpicks in their mouths, from boot camp graduation, and say “hey” to the chief picking them up. Are you kidding?

I am a retired E-6 and work for a government contractor. When I go on bases to work, I see some squared-away sailors, but there are still a bunch of overweight enlisted men and women walking around, especially E-7 and E-8s. How can you keep advancing them and telling the E-6s and below that if they don’t lose weight they will be discharged?

With all the bad press about appearances, I want to share my experience on my first ship, the amphibious assault ship Bataan, from July 2003 to July 2006. We would always wear our dress whites/blues on the quarterdeck and police each other on our uniforms, and always turn sailors back who were attempting to go on liberty in unsat civilian clothes.
