CPO initiation
I remember mine, lots of pointless stuff (the year was 1987). In the end, during the pinning ceremony, I was bawling like a friggin’ baby and the chief [who] was roughest on me hugged me and congratulated me. I was proud of what I endured, and proud to make chief, the rank my Dad had pinned on almost 38 years earlier.

Although I wouldn’t trade my “initiation” process for anything, I was able to quickly identify the ones [who] had an objective behind their intent [versus] the morons [who] made chief by pure undermanning in their rates. Let me rephrase that: I was initiated by chiefs but hazed by E-7s.

The liberal media is to blame for the sensitivity of much of today’s youth, and some of the elders. The political correctness of today’s society is very disturbing, because no one wants to offend anyone and everyone has to be a winner. Should we award the Super Bowl trophy, Stanley Cup or NASCAR championship to the team with the worst record? I was once told, in apparent seriousness, by one of the best ensigns I have served with, that we could no longer call people “dirtbag.” It was politically incorrect. We now had to call them “earth sacks.”
If the whiny young sailors consider “shipmate” to be derogatory, then fix yourself. Do the right thing, wear your uniform correctly, maintain your living space and especially do your job and accept responsibility when you screw up. What is the next word to go down this road — perhaps “sailor”?
