Bill: Give more GI Bill money for some majors

People using the Post-9/11 GI Bill to pursue degrees in math, science, engineering or technology fields would receive an additional $2,000 a year in benefits under a bill introduced by Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.

The extra cash would be paid in a lump sum at the start of the quarter, semester or term, with no requirement to pay it back if the student changes majors or drops out of school.

The bill, S 3488, was referred to the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, on which Brown serves. This is part of a larger effort to encourage more people to get into high-demand fields, but it is unclear whether it will work and how much it might cost. Both those issues will have to be resolved for the measure to have a chance of becoming law.
