• Bombs Away! The World War II Bombing Campaigns Over Europe by John R. Bruning, Zenith Press, 336 pages, 450 photographs, $50. Nicely designed coffee-table book, the fourth in a series, with rarely seen color photos.

• The Crimean War, a History by Orlando Figes, Henry Holt and Co., 608 pages, $35 for hardback, $16.99 e-book. The Turkish-British-Russian-French war saw the Light Brigade, Florence Nightingale and the deaths of a million soldiers.

• Keep from All Thoughtful Men: How U.S. Economists Won World War II by Jim Lacey, Naval Institute Press, 280 pages, $36.95. How revolutions in finance and statistics changed the war.

• Preparing for Victory: Thomas Holcomb and the Making of the Modern Marine Corps, 1936-1943 by David J. Ulbrich, Naval Institute Press, 304 pages, $35.95. The commandant of 17,000 Marines in 1918 and 385,000 Marines in 1943.

• Battle for the City of the Dead: In the Shadow of the Golden Dome, Najaf, August 2004 by Dick Camp, Zenith Press, 320 pages with 132 color photos, $30. Marines and soldiers and the fight for the home of a Shiite shrine in Iraq.

• Fly Navy: Discovering the Extraordinary People and Enduring Spirit of Naval Aviation by Alvin Townley, St. Martin’s Press, 352 pages, $25.99. With inspiration from the movie “Top Gun,” a survey of Navy aviation history.

• Hearts Touched by Fire: the Best of Battles and Leaders of the Civil War edited by Harold Holzer, Modern Library, 1,192 pages, $35. The original 1883 four-volume collection of firsthand accounts by battle leaders is a mere thousand pages in this version by one of the authors of last winter’s “The New York Times Complete Civil War, 1861-1865.”
