‘Hot’ Air Force singer Angie Johnson impresses on ‘The Voice’

An airman hit the blind auditions of “The Voice” with her best shot, belting out Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker” and wowing judge Cee Lo Green enough to make it to the next round of NBC’s singing competition.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Angie Johnson’s shot at stardom started with an acoustic set for workers at an Afghanistan air base this summer. A singer with the Missouri Air National Guard band Sidewinder, the 31-year-old’s version of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” was captured by a fan who posted it online.

Within days, the video had gone viral, and it caught the ear of “The Voice” host Carson Daly, who tweeted her an invitation to the show’s auditions.

“I was like, ‘Look at this hot chick singing who’s defending our country,’ ” Daly said during Johnson’s audition segment on the show. “She’s got to get a shot.”

Asked about pre-audition jitters, she confided, “I’ve been in a war zone. I’ve faced mortar fire. I’ve had to carry a weapon around. I’m trying to be like, ‘This is cake,’ but I’m not going to sit here and front that I’m not going to be nervous as all get-out.”

Still, she said, she was eager to take the stage. “It’s my shot. Not everyone gets their shot.”

The show’s twist on the singing competition format starts with judges seated with their backs to contestants. Judges can turn around only when at least one has committed to mentor them into the next round of the show.

Green was impressed with what he heard — and what he saw.

“Are you as beautiful as I think you are?” gushed Green. “I turned my chair around because I love rock and roll and I love a woman with guts, with power, with confidence.”

Johnson, a veteran of seven Middle East deployments, says “music has always been my heart and my soul, so I auditioned for the Air Force bands, and it is the best job in the military.”

Viewers will get to see how she progresses in the coming weeks as the show transitions into singer-versus-singer “battle” rounds.
