The Mission Continues matches up vets with nonprofits

Staff report
Posted : Friday Mar 2, 2012 15:57:35 EST

A nonprofit known as The Mission Continues wants to place 500 veterans in nonprofit fellowships over the coming year. The organization helps veterans make the transition from military to civilian life in a unique way — by helping them see that they can continue serving their country through nonprofit work.

Since forming in 2007, The Mission Continues has funded fellowships for about 200 veterans, working with 145 host organizations, from Habitat for Humanity to Boys & Girls Clubs. The program is available for post-9/11 veterans who were honorably discharged and served at least two years.

According to initial findings of a study by Washington University, 71 percent of The Mission Continues fellows have furthered their education, 86 percent have transferred their military skills to civilian employment, 91 percent built networking opportunities for a future career path, 86 percent believe the program helped them become leaders in their communities, and 91 percent have taught others the value of service and have continued serving their communities.
