New York-area recruiting commander relieved

The commander for Navy recruiting in the New York metropolitan area was relieved of duty yesterday for failing to meet goals.
Cmdr. Greg Gjurich took command of Navy Recruiting District New York in October 2005 but was relieved of his duties by Navy Recruiting District North commander, Capt. Burt Palmer, “due to loss of confidence in his ability to lead his command.”
A “combination of factors,” including “poor production,” was behind the relief, according to Lt. Cmdr. Lisa Braun, public affairs officer at Navy Recruiting Command in Millington, Tenn.
“It was a consistent issue,” Braun said.
The military has had behavioral problems in the past with some recruiters but Braun said any form of misconduct is not a factor in this relief.
Cmdr. Margaret Ward, the district executive officer, assumed command at the East Meadow, N.Y. headquarters after Gjurich’s departure.
