Elrod sailor found dead in Newport News

An officer with the Norfolk, Va.-based frigate Elrod was found dead early Monday in Newport News, Va., police said, the victim of a gunshot wound and possibly a robbery.
Ensign Cory Allen Voss, 30, was found slumped over the steering wheel of his pickup truck in the parking lot of an office park. Paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene.
Voss’ wife told police he left their home at about 11 p.m. Sunday to get money from a credit union ATM. She called police at around 6:15 a.m. Monday when he hadn’t come home, said Newport News Police spokesman Lou Thurston.
A woman who worked at a dentist’s office in the office park arrived for work about that time and saw Voss slumped in his car, but she “just thought somebody had a rough night, and they were sleeping it off,” Thurston said. When the woman checked later and saw Voss was still there, she called police.
Thurston said investigators are checking with Voss’ bank to see if his ATM card was used Sunday night and if any money was taken out of his account. Thurston said the police have no suspects yet.
Voss, who was commissioned in 2005, was previously a storekeeper first class; he enlisted in the Navy on New Year’s Eve 1996. He served in an explosive ordnance disposal unit at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, then aboard the frigate Halyburton and the destroyer Thorn. He reported for duty aboard the Elrod as a surface warfare officer in 2005.
