Fewer slots this year to make senior chief
Posted : Wednesday May 2, 2007 21:25:01 EDT
Those looking to make E-8 have a slimmer chance this year, with 225 fewer quotas available.
Of the 13,046 chiefs eligible to advance, 1,472 will get the chance to add a star to their anchors, an opportunity of about 11 percent.
That’s down from last year’s 13 percent opportunity, when 1,697 quotas were available to be filled by the senior chief selection board.
The best news is for the torpedoman’s mates — TMs will advance eight of 16 eligible chiefs, for a 50 percent advancement rate, the Navy’s best this year. Ironically, TMs will soon be absorbed by the gunner’s mate community.
On the flip side of the coin, there are four ratings that will see no one advance into the senior chief ranks this year: engineering aide, hull maintenance technician, machinery repairman and personnel specialist.
Of the 87 ratings with sailors at the E-8 level, 50 are at or above the Navy average of 11 percent, while 37 are below average.
