Navy divers helping in Minn. bridge recovery
Posted : Friday Aug 10, 2007 16:43:17 EDT
A team of Navy divers and salvage experts is helping in the aftermath of the interstate bridge collapse in Minneapolis, the Defense Department announced Monday.
Eighteen divers and a five-person command-and-control team from Mobile Dive and Salvage Unit 2, based at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, Va., are helping local salvage teams and other federal units with salvage and recovery efforts.
The divers are operating under the combined aegis of the U.S. Department of Transportation, which requested their help from the Defense Department, and U.S. Northern Command, the joint command headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., that is responsible for homeland defense and assisting with civil recovery efforts.
MDSU 2 has assisted in other salvage operations that include recovering a Titan IV rocket off the coast of Florida and raising an SH-60 Seahawk helicopter from the seabed under 270 feet of water in the Red Sea, the Defense Department said.
