SNA recognizes Navy Times cartoonist
Posted : Tuesday Jan 22, 2008 15:06:25 EST
Cartoonist Jeff Bacon, whose rascally cartoon sailors and Marines have appeared for decades in Navy Times, was recognized Jan. 17 for his “devotion to the Navy” with the Surface Navy Association’s highest award.
Bacon — a retired Navy captain, the brains behind “Broadside” and its tougher Marine Corps Times cousin, “Greenside,” and a blogger for NavyTimes.com — was presented SNA’s highest award for cartoons that are “edgy but not disrespectful, politically challenging but not preachy” and for having only an agenda “to make sailors relate to his work and to laugh,” the award reads.
SNA flew Bacon from his home in Idaho to the symposium to receive the award from retired Vice Adm. Kevin Green, the president of SNA, at the association’s annual conference just outside Washington, D.C.
Bacon was “surprised and humbled” to get the SNA recognition, he said, and as a former surface warfare officer their recognition meant a lot to him personally.
