DELAND, Fla. — A former Navy sailor is going to prison for life for fatally shooting an 18-year-old man during last year’s spring break.
Matthew Castro was found guilty Friday of killing Lance Ulland, a Minnesota man who died after answering Castro’s knock on his Daytona Beach motel door on March 18, 2007.
A judge sentenced the 29-year-old Castro to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Castro took the stand during trial and admitted to the shooting, but said it was an accident.
Castro had been searching for a cocaine dealer who sold him a $50 bag of salt. Ulland was not the drug dealer Castro was looking for.
Assistant Public Defender Jim Valerino said he was shocked at the verdict.
