OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A Navy hospital corpsman stationed at Camp Pendleton and his wife and young son were killed Sunday night in a head-on collision on a Southern California road, authorities said.
The coroner’s bureau of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on Monday identified the victims as Andres Sanagustin, 48, Maribeth Sanagustin, 36, and Angelo Sanagustin, 4, all of Winchester, Calif.
The Sanagustins were in a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu sedan on Warren Road in Winchester at 8:09 p.m. Sunday when the car was struck head-on by a GMC 2500 pickup truck that had crossed over the double-yellow lines, according to the sheriff’s department. The couple was pronounced dead at the scene, and their son was taken to a hospital in Murrieta, where he died, according to officials.
The California Highway Patrol was investigating the accident.
Authorities were looking for the driver of the pickup, who fled the scene and was seen getting into another vehicle, Officer Ron Thatcher, a CHP spokesman, said Monday. “Investigators are following up on a couple of leads,” he added.
Officials at Camp Pendleton said an automobile crash had claimed the life of a first-class hospital corpsman who served with 1st Medical Logistics Company, 1st Supply Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, and his wife and young son. They had not identified the victim until after a 24-hour waiting period after the next-of-kin relatives are notified
“The Marines and sailors of Camp Pendleton and the 1st MLG are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and our thoughts are with the sailor’s family and friends,” Camp Pendleton officials said in a statement.
