University of Hawaii may do Navy research

HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii is expected to enter into an agreement to conduct research for the Navy.

The agreement would allow the Navy to contract directly with the university for research in areas such as astronomy and oceanography without going through a competitive bidding process.

The Navy research center could bring in as much as $10 million a year to the university over the term of the contract.

But those who unsuccessfully tried to stop the center say it turns the university into an agent of the Navy and could lead to secret weapons research.

Supporters counter that the university already conducts military-funded research.

UH Vice President for Research Jim Gaines says all the research conducted at the center will be made public.
