Empty Navy bomb container found in lake

LAPORTE, Ind. — Authorities are trying to determine how an empty 400-pound Navy bomb container ended up in a northern Indiana lake.
LaPorte Park Department employee Joe Davis found the 6-foot-long gray metal cylinder Monday morning at a park along the shore of Pine Lake.
Davis unscrewed the cap on the container and found that it was empty. He called police and the container was hauled to a nearby Indiana National Guard armory.
He said fresh tire tracks in the area indicate that the cylinder was dragged up from about 10 feet offshore during a weekend lake cleanup.
Indiana National Guard Spc. Bill Jarrett said the container looks like it hadn’t been in the lake very long, adding that the container was first manufactured in 1958 and is still used to ship cluster bombs.
