High school gives 82-year-old vet his diploma
Posted : Tuesday Jul 8, 2008 10:03:32 EDT
GIBSON CITY, Ill. — Navy veteran Howard Arthur Monical has served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
But after those experiences, the 82-year-old from Gibson City in Ford County says he was disappointed he never was able to earn his high school diploma. Monical had to leave Bellflower Township High School in 1945 before graduating.
Monical and his wife Cathy received help from Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s office, which found a state law that lets veterans receive their diplomas.
After some paperwork, Monical was given his honorary diploma during a special presentation at a recent class reunion.
Now Monical can add the diploma to a career that includes four trips to Antarctica and 22 years with the Navy.
