Re-enactors telling tale of WWII destroyer
Posted : Monday Aug 11, 2008 6:11:37 EDT
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — While there are many Civil War re-enactors in South Carolina, this weekend re-enactors make history from a more recent era come alive.
World War II re-enactors will be aboard the destroyer Laffey at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum to tell the story of the vessel dubbed “the ship that would not die.”
The destroyer was the target of a Japanese aerial attack in April, 1945 off Okinawa which crippled the ship and left nearly a third of its crew dead.
Patriots Point says the museum works with a number of living history groups who help interpret the vessels and exhibits at the attraction on Charleston Harbor. Most of the re-enactors are active duty Navy, Navy Reservists or Navy vets.
