A senior Pacific area Coast Guard officer was charged with wrongfully using cocaine and has “temporarily been reassigned to a non-supervisory position,” according to the Coast Guard.
Capt. Michael Sullivan was charged Aug. 19 with one specification of wrongful use of cocaine under Article 112(a) of the Uniform Code of Military Justice and one charge of obstruction of justice under Article 133 of the UCMJ after testing positive during a random drug screening.
Sullivan previously served as the Pacific Area’s chief of response and oversaw “the operation of 20 major cutters and the Maritime Forces Protection Unit in the Pacific Northwest as well as the employment of 10 Port Security Units, Maritime Safety and Security Teams, and the Pacific Area Tactical Law Enforcement Team,” according to his biography.
The date for his Article 32 hearing has not been set.
If found guilty, Sullivan could face dismissal from the Coast Guard, up to 10 years confinement and forfeiture of all pay and allowances.
