Divers: No obstruction at Intrepid pier
Posted : Thursday Sep 25, 2008 6:28:08 EDT
NEW YORK — Army divers came up empty-handed after seeking to clear an underwater obstruction near the rebuilt Hudson River pier where the renovated aircraft carrier Intrepid will again be moored next month.
After a dive on Tuesday, the divers said the unknown obstruction, seen earlier on scans, was no longer there.
“Whatever it was, it may have been sucked up in the dredging equipment,” said Jody Fisher, a spokesman for the museum ship.
The harbor bottom next to Pier 80 has been constantly dredged in preparation for the scheduled Oct. 2 return of the famed aircraft carrier. The warship has spent the past two years undergoing refurbishment in New Jersey and Staten Island.
